Australian John Coates, who heads the IOC (International Olympic Committee) organizing committee for the Tokyo Games, quoted Brazil as speaking on Friday (22) about the challenges facing the event in the midst of the Covid pandemic. -19.

“We are facing real problems because there are athletes from 206 countries,” said Coates, also chairman of the Australian Olympic Committee, during a news conference.

“Yesterday, there were 10,000 new cases in Brazil [segundo o Ministério da Saúde, 18.508]. Very few countries are advanced [no combate à doença] like us [Austrália]. ”

According to him, not even the existence of a vaccine against the coronavirus can guarantee the Olympic Games.

“The Games can only be played in 2021, we cannot postpone them again and we have to assume that there will not be a vaccine, or, if there is, in a year there will not be enough time to share it all over the world,” he said.

He put the month of October as a determining factor in evaluating the scenario of virus control around the world and making a decision about the future of the Games, which “can be very different from how we are used to it”.

“Do we quarantine the Olympic village? Do all athletes when they get there quarantine? Do we restrict the presence of spectators in the places? Do we separate the athletes in the mixed zone where the media is?”, He exemplified.

Coates spoke a day after the organization’s president, Thomas Bach, warned that the Tokyo Games would be canceled if they were not played in 2021.

On March 24, the IOC announced the postponement of the Olympics, initially scheduled from July 24 to August 9, 2020. The new dates of the event are from July 23 to August 8, 2021.
